Muriel Furrer died after a dramatic accident. The young Swiss woman suffered serious head injuries during the World Championships.
The cycling world championships are underway in Switzerland. During several days, seniors, seniors and juniors compete for medals. There are also mixed competitions. On Thursday, junior girls competed in the mass start race. It was then that a drama occurred with the participation of the hosts’ representative.
Serious accident of a young cyclist
Muriel Furrer is the country’s leading female cyclist with numerous successes. This year, she stood on the second step of the podium twice during the Swiss road championships. In Zurich, she wanted to show her good side in front of her home crowd and perhaps fight for success. Unfortunately, there was a tragic accident.
According to information provided by the International Cycling Union, Furrer fell off her bike on the route between Zumikon and Kusnacht for unknown reasons, suffering serious head injuries. The services quickly transported the teenager to the hospital, where she was in a “very critical” condition.
“Swiss athlete Muriel Furrer collapsed on Thursday, September 26, during the junior women’s road race at the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, for reasons that have not yet been determined. Muriel Furrer was taken to hospital by rescue helicopter. She suffered a serious head injury and is in a critical condition,” read the UCI statement on the organization’s website.

Unfortunately, Muriel Furrer did not survive the accident. “Today we received tragic news about the death of the young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer. With her passing, the cycling community lost a rider with a great future ahead of her,” we read in the UCI press release.
“The UCI and the Organizing Committee of the 2024 UCI Road Cycling Road and Para-Cycling World Championships express their sincerest condolences to the family, friends of Muriel Furrer and her federation Swiss Cycling. Muriel Furrer’s family asks that their privacy be respected at this very painful time,” it said.
