Drama of a famous rival Iga Świątek. She just finished the US Open!

Maria Sakkari finished her participation in the Grand Slam tournament in New York in the first round. The Greek lost to the lower-ranked Chinese Yafan Wang.

The Greek had to forfeit the match, withdrawing from the game due to health problems at 2:6. Maria Sakkari was seeded 9th in the US Open. So it was quite a sensation.

The Greek was not ashamed of her tears on the court. This was certainly not how she imagined her performance in New York. Unfortunately, Sakkari was unable to win the unequal battle with her own health.

US Open: Another Grand Slam disaster for Maria Sakkari

What exactly was wrong with the Greek? One can suggest her behavior, among others, during the medical break that Sakkari requested after the end of the first set. It was obvious that the problems were related to her right shoulder. As it turned out, after consulting a specialist, Sakkari decided to retire.

Unfortunately, from the perspective of the Greek tennis player, this is not the first time in the case of Grand Slam tournaments. The 29-year-old player from Athens knows the taste of, for example, the semifinals of the US Open. However, Sakkari did it a long time ago, in 2021. What’s more, in the combined statistics of all Grand Slam tournaments, the Greek has failed to report to the second week of tournament play for the eleventh time in a row (!)
