Flights canceled in Ibiza and Majorca and flash floods in several regions. This weekend in Spain was marked by a weather breakdown caused by storm Alice.

This is the second time in two weeks that severe weather has occurred in Spain’s Balearic archipelago, including the popular party island of Ibiza. On Saturday, heavy rains led to traffic chaos. The photos showed cars and motorcycles submerged in water.

Problems also occurred at Ibiza airport. The videos show a leaking roof and water pouring down the baggage claim belt. There was a power outage.

Ibiza Airport was closed for approximately 90 minutes (between 18:00 and 19:20). During this time, the runway and other areas affected by the storm were cleared. In total, 24 of 295 scheduled departures were canceled.

“If you are planning a flight to or from the airport, please contact the airline for information on the flight status. If you must travel, exercise extreme caution and follow the instructions provided on official accounts,” Ibiza airport authorities warned on Monday morning. Disruptions also affected Majorca, where 19 of 942 flights scheduled for Saturday were canceled due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Flash floods in Catalonia and Murcia

Over the weekend, the situation was also serious in mainland Spain, both in Catalonia, the north-east and the south-east. No information about any deaths or injuries was reported until Monday, but services helped drivers get out of their vehicles submerged in the water. This was the case, among others, in Murcia.

Earlier, the national weather agency AEMET issued the highest red alert for Tarragona province, warning of 180 millimeters of rain in 12 hours in the Ebro Delta. The Catalan Civil Defense Agency appealed to residents in the area to stay at home.
