President Donald Trump confirmed the media reports during the Monday (July 6) conference at the White House. There was clear contact between the politician and FIFA.
What exactly are we talking about? This is the case of Florian Balogun and the red card that the US representative received during the 1/16 final match of the FIFA World Cup. The American is in great form, having already scored three goals during the 2026 World Cup.
Unfortunately for the hosts, in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which the hosts won (2-0), he was sent off the field for a brutal foul on the opponent. Brutal, although – paradoxically – accidental, considering the situation in which Balogun was guilty.
According to the rules known for a long time, after a red card in the 1/16 finals, the US national team player was to be suspended in the next knockout stage match with the hosts. But FIFA decided, several dozen hours before the start of the USA-Belgium match… to suspend the penalty against the player, which shocked the entire football world.

Shortly after FIFA’s decision regarding Balogun, media reports appeared that the White House was to be involved in the precedent of suspending a red card during the tournament. Specifically, President Donald Trump himself.
FIFA has not officially commented on these reports. However, the US president did it in his own style – during a press conference in the Oval Office on Monday (i.e. July 6).
– I asked for a re-analysis because I don’t think it was a foul (…) However, I didn’t tell them what to do. The FIFA commission made the right decision, admitted Trump, answering a question about the controversy regarding the cancellation of the penalty for a US national team player.
The USA-Belgium match will take place this night, i.e. from Monday to Tuesday. The round of 16 match starts at 2:00 a.m. Polish time. It seems that after such a gigantic scandal, the European team will gain a large group of fans in the context of competing against… privileged hosts.
It is difficult to remain indifferent to such interference during a football celebration that fans have been waiting for for four years.

From June 11 to July 19, the 23rd FIFA World Cup will be held on pitches in three countries – the United States, Mexico and Canada. An event that will certainly be unique, if only because of its format. For the first time in history, as many as 48 teams will take part in the main tournament.
The title from four years ago is defended by the Argentines. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Messi and company defeated the French in the final, winning after a series of penalties (4:2). In the history of football World Cups, Brazil has the most titles – as many as five. Four victories in the history of the World Championships belong to the Italians and Germans. The Argentines won three times. More than once, the trophy for winning the World Cup was raised – twice – by the players of France and Uruguay.
The Polish national team was third twice at the World Championships, but those were the old days – we are talking about the events in 1974 and 1982. At the last World Cup, Poles managed to advance to the knockout phase, but were eliminated in the 1/8 finals by the French (1:3).
