Do you have PESEL in the mObywatel application? The ministry appeals for caution

Reserving your PESEL number in the mObywatel application is an effective way to protect your data against fraudsters. The Ministry of Digitization reminds about the new regulations.
From November 2023, Poles can effectively protect their PESEL number against unauthorized use thanks to the introduction of the reservation function in the application mCitizen. The Ministry of Digitization assures that this tool provides significant support in the fight against the growing number of financial frauds.
How does blocking the PESEL number work?
You can reserve your PESEL number at any time using the application mCitizenwebsite or in person at the commune office. It is also possible to temporarily unblock the number for a specific period of time. The re-reservation process lasts from 30 minutes to 12 hourswhich minimizes the risk of manipulation, such as grandson fraud or policeman fraud.
From June 1, 2024 financial institutions will be obliged to verify the PESEL Number Objection Register before granting a loan. Thanks to this, if the restricted number is used by fraudsters, the injured party will not have to repay the debt. This is a key element in increasing consumer protection against financial fraud.
Over 4 million restricted numbers
So far, many people have already used the PESEL number restriction function over 4 million Poles. Importantly, the system works automatically in the event of reporting the loss of an ID card, without affecting the process of issuing a new document.
The initiative of the Ministry of Digitization is a response to increasingly advanced methods of fraud and extortion. By retaining the PESEL number, personal data is better protected and Poles can feel safer in situations requiring identity verification.
