Disruption in the ruling coalition? The head of the Ministry of National Defense is fighting for Nawrocki’s project

Although it may have seemed that the fate of “Polish SAFE 0 percent” was already decided, President Nawrocki can still have hope. An important coalition politician has still not rejected this idea.

When President Karol Nawrocki vetoed the bill introducing a mechanism for spending money from the EU SAFE program, many people believed that the government would not accept his proposal, conventionally called “SAFE 0 percent”, in return. Both Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the Speaker of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, made it clear that the president’s bill would end up in the trash.

The SAFE 0 percent project is criticized even by the opposition

It was also pointed out that the proposal of the president and president of the National Bank of Poland, Adam Glapiński, was too general and “nebulous”. It lacked specific solutions and sums. He was criticized not only by politicians from the ruling camp, but also by representatives of the opposition. Krzysztof Bosak from Konfederacja stated that it was a “dead idea”. – If the government is not interested in it, there is nothing to talk about – he said briefly. He added that little is still known about the sources of financing for armaments in this version.

– A general statement was included in the act that it would come from the profit of the National Bank of Poland. So far, it has been assumed in public finances that the NBP’s profit goes to the budget on the revenue side. According to this act, it would go to a completely different, separate fund, in which joint control would be exercised by people appointed by the president. This means creating a completely new financing architecture, modernizing the armed forces and dispersing decision-making compared to the current state, he noted.

The ruling coalition is not unanimous regarding “Polish SAFE”?

As it turns out, however, the presidential project has an important defender within the ruling coalition itself. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on Thursday, March 19, that he wants to see how MPs debate the bill in the Sejm. He is consistent in his attitude – he said from the beginning that he was interested in both “SAFE” projects. He also appealed to the president of the National Bank of Poland to show the profit that could be used for purchases for the army.
