Disgrace of the Polish champions! Shocking scenes in a match against semi-amateurs

Lech Poznań przegrał w Lidze Konferencji

Nobody expected this. Lech Poznań lost to… Gibraltar champion Lincoln Red Imps 1-2 in the UEFA Conference League.

It is worth recalling that in the first round Lech Poznań won at home against Rapid Wien 4:1. It seemed that the match against Lincoln Red Imps from Gibraltar would be a relatively easy match for the Polish team.

But it turned out completely different. The Polish champions lost 1:2 to the Gibraltar champions. It’s a defeat that’s really hard to explain based only on purely sporting arguments. It seems that the Polish champions were simply too sure that this clash could not go any other way than in favor of Kolejorz.

UEFA Conference League: A gigantic failure by Lech Poznań!

However, it turned out differently than expected, and the hosts, Lincoln Red Imps – which usually consists of semi-amateur players – played ambitiously and with an interesting idea at the start. Kolejorz was not a team that set the tone for events on the pitch. Artificial turf is a poor explanation for a team that has ambitions to play for more than just a good impression in the league phase of the Conference League.

What’s worse, the honorable goal for Lech came after a goal scored from… a dubious penalty kick. The referee finally whistled the offense, and Mikael Ishak equalized in the 77th minute. However, the Poznań team did not manage to achieve a draw. They conceded a goal from a set piece, in a bizarre way.

It seems that coach Niels Frederiksen went a little overboard with the number of rotations he made in relation to Lech’s starting lineup. Kolejorz’s coach apparently wanted to spare the team from the weekend’s hit in the league, i.e. a trip to Legia Warszawa. Apparently, however, there were too many corrections this time.

The Polish champions were the only Polish team to lose in the second round of the Conference League. Earlier, Legia Warszawa won in Krakow 2:1 against Shakhtar Donetsk, Jagiellonia Białystok drew 1:1 on the difficult terrain of the French RC Strasbourg, and Raków Częstochowa ended its trip to the Czech Sigma Olomouc with the same result (1:1).
