Did she overdo it with feeding the animals? Her house was besieged by almost 100 raccoons
A very unusual intervention took place in Kitsap County, Washington. The sheriff had to save a woman whose house was surrounded by a pack of aggressive raccoons.
This story would be hard to believe if it weren’t for the recording posted by the services online. The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office released a video showing a large group of raccoons gathering around a resident’s home.
Sheds surrounded the woman’s house
The woman, who could not leave her property, decided to call the services. During the report, she reported that a large number of raccoons started approaching her house about 6 weeks ago. She admitted that she had been feeding these animals for 38 years, but she had never seen such a number of them before.
“She said the regular raccoons were nice, but the new ones scared her,” sheriff’s office spokesman Kevin McCarty told USA Today. The woman allegedly added that previously, raccoons left after receiving food. However, she emphasized that “the new ones are aggressive.” A release from the sheriff’s office said nearly a hundred of these animals were counted in a county resident’s garden.
In conversations with journalists, local officials drew attention to the problem of raccoons in the region. Animals approach human habitations and scratch at windows, hoping to receive food. However, stories such as the latter have not been recorded before.
Wild animals should not be fed
State Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Bridget Mire noted that wildlife should not be fed. She reminded that their gathering around an unnatural food source can spread various diseases.
The official explained that such “help” also harms the animals themselves in the long run. They may lose their sense of caution and interact with people. In many cases, this can lead to undesirable consequences.
