Defeat of the Polish national tennis team. Zero defeat without Hubert Hurkacz
The Polish national team lost to South Korea in the Davis Cup World Group I match. The White and Reds surprisingly failed to win even once.
The Poland-South Korea match was supposed to be a ticket to play for a return to the elite in the Davis Cup. However, the Poles, as hosts, had to cope without their biggest star on the hard surface in Zielona Góra.
The men’s team played without Hubert Hurkacz, a tennis player in the top ten of the ATP rankings.
Davis Cup: Poland clearly worse than South Korea
Why was the tennis player from Wrocław absent? After health problems that prevented him from competing at the Olympic Games, Hurkacz decided to take better care of himself, which is why he did not appear in the Polish national team.
In his absence, the highest-seeded singles player on the Polish side was Kamil Majchrzak. The Pole is currently ranked 163rd in the ATP rankings, but it is worth noting that he is only just returning to the fight for the highest position – after a suspension. Additionally, Maks Kaśnikowski, the revelation of this year’s US Open, also performed in singles.
Unfortunately, both singles players lost their matches on Friday, which meant that the Poles were losing 0:2 after the first day of competition in Zielona Góra. Majchrzak was weaker than Soonwoo Kwon 5:7 and 6:7(3), while Kaśnikowski lost to Seongchan Hong 6:7 (8), 2:6. To make matters worse, the Polish doubles players also failed to cope with their Korean opponents. Jan Zieliński and Konrad Drzewiecki lost in three sets and it became clear that with the score 0:3 everything was already decided, unfortunately, to Poland’s disadvantage.
There is only one match left to play on Saturday, the singles match, but it will no longer have any significance in the final count. It seems that the Poles did not take advantage of their chances, because every day they could have changed the fate of the duels in their favor. Ultimately, however, it ended in a big disappointment.
