Dead birds in Warsaw. First research results are in
Recently, an increased number of dead birds have been noticed in Warsaw. After initial tests, the scenario of an infectious disease has been ruled out.
Reporters from the program “Czysta Polska” Polsat News recently reported on suspicious behavior of birds in the capital. Animals, mainly grey crows, less often jackdaws and pigeons, are decimated by a mysterious disease. They have disturbing neurological symptoms: before death, they suffer from convulsions and loss of balance.
Dead birds in Warsaw. One cause ruled out
Until now, dead birds in larger numbers have been found in Bielany, Żoliborz, Mokotów and Saska Kępa. There have been reports of several dozen cases for which a common cause could not be found. Numerous reports have been received in this matter by the District Veterinary Inspectorate in Warsaw.
Ultimately, officials took samples from four birds and sent them to the National Veterinary Institute in Puławy. Initial results ruled out infectious diseases. This information was provided to Zielona Interia by veterinarian Izabela Śmiechowicz-Molęcka. The birds were tested for avian influenza and Newcastle disease, among other things.
What next with the dead birds?
It is not known who will continue to investigate the source of the mysterious disease. The District Veterinary Officer emphasized that his responsibilities include only combating infectious animal diseases and zoonoses.
Zielona Interia journalists have already asked the Ministry of Climate and Environment about this matter. They want to know whether the ministry will investigate the cause of the birds’ deaths, for example through the Environmental Protection Inspectorate.
