The end of Dariusz Szpakowski at the World Championships. Legend explained the decision
The list included, among others: Mateusz Borek, Grzegorz Mielcarski, Jacek Laskowski, Robert Podoliński, Maciej Iwański, Radosław Gilewicz, Rafał Kędzior and Marcin Feddek.
Why was Szpakowski missing? The legendary commentator decided to speak out, and his short speech appeared on Thursday (i.e. May 14).
– Thank you very much for your numerous comments, as well as the messages following the information announced by Telewizja Polska that I will not comment on the world championships in the United States, Canada and Mexico. I am consistent. After the sky-high, phenomenal, phenomenal dream finale in Qatar, i.e. Argentina – France, I said goodbye to commenting on the World Cup. Then, after the match, I said that from time to time I would like to comment on a match of, for example, the Polish national team. Maybe I would have a different opinion if Poles played in this World Cup, but there is no point in going back to the past. It is what it is – said the legendary commentator.
Szpakowski commented on a total of 12 World Cups in his career. He covered tournaments as a reporter (in Polish Radio) and commentator in the years 1978-2022. In total, this gave Szpakowski over 100 matches at the microphone during the World Championships.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first to be held in three countries, i.e. the United States, Mexico and Canada. For the first time in history, as many as 48 national teams qualified for the tournament. So far, the number of participants in the World Championships has been a maximum of 32 teams.
Unfortunately, the Polish national team will not be among them. The Poles lost the final of the UEFA play-off zone in the away match against Sweden (2:3). This is the first World Cup without Poles since 2014.
