“Cookie Monster” at the wheel. He was caught by a speed camera
An unusual road incident occurred in Dortmund. One of the city’s police speed cameras caught a driver dressed as “Cookie Monster” speeding.
According to German media, the driver was caught by a speed camera on the A45 motorway. The event took place on September 20, 2024, at approximately 9:08 p.m. The driver, traveling at a speed of 11 km/h over the speed limit, was photographed by a mobile speed camera belonging to the Dortmund police.

Although the fine for such an offense is usually €40, the police suspect that the driver was deliberately speeding to get a funny photo.
Police in North Rhine-Westphalia criticized the whole situation, calling it a “bad joke”. As police spokesman Peter Bandermann pointed out, the “Cookie Monster” costume seriously limits the driver’s visibility and increases the risk of road accidents.

In the interview, he emphasized that playing with masks in road traffic can turn into a tragedy, and the relatives of people injured in such accidents will not be consoled by the fact that the perpetrator “regrets” his irresponsible behavior in court.
Foreign media also drew attention to this event. TMZ reports that a driver dressed as a “Sesame Street” character reached speeds of 60 mph in a 50 mph zone.
The vehicle used by “Cookie Monster” is an Audi registered to a 57-year-old man from Hagen. Under German regulations, the owner of a vehicle may refuse to testify and avoid direct liability unless he admits to wearing a mask or identifies the actual perpetrator.
If the police do not clearly establish the identity of the driver, the owner may be forced to keep a special logbook documenting who uses the vehicle and when, which may pose an additional logistical problem.
