Chinese scientists form a micro -carrier for special tasks. Is the size of a mosquito

In the laboratories of the National University of Defense Technology in the province of Hunan, researchers presented a drone prototype, which with size matches the mosquito.
The device, shown in the material of the CCTV state television, fits between the fingers of the hand.
The design has two thin wings reminiscent of a small leaf and three extremely delicate “legs”. Scientists also presented a variant equipped with four wings, controlled from the application level on the smartphone. The project is conceived as a tool for reconnaissance tasks, but the creators also do not exclude wider combat application.
Miniaturization on the brink of possibilities
“This requires the cooperation of various disciplines, including bionics,” emphasize the authors of the concept, commenting on the scale of engineering challenges that such a distant reduction in each part of the flying machine brings. It is necessary to minimize not only the hull and the mechanics of the wing, but also the power supply, navigation sensors and control circuits. At this stage, the search for ultra -light and durable materials and the development of algorithms, which with limited computing power will allow a stable flight in field conditions.
Norwegian predecessor and world standard
The current reference point in the field of microdrons for the army remains the PD-100 Black Hornet-a miniature drone produced in Norway, which is 10 cm long and resembles a miniature helicopter.
Within 25 minutes, he can do a scout within a radius of up to 1 km. For several years, Black Hornet has already been equipped with the German, American, Australian, Norwegian and French army, and since 2019 he has also supported soldiers of the commando military unit from Lubliniec. In practice, this means that reconnaissance microlatforms have entered the daily arsenal of many NATO armed forces.
Strategic context and legal implications
The appearance of a mosquito drone can significantly change the nature of special operations. The device is so small that it becomes almost invisible to the eye, opens the way to penetrate strongly protected objects, including administration buildings and military infrastructure of the opponent. At the same time, this strengthens the legal dilemma related to the identification of goals and responsibility for the activities of autonomous systems.
Experts in the field of armed conflict law point out that micro -inmates can carry small explosives or electronics disrupts, which complicates the classic distinction between defensive and offensive weapons.
Prospects for further development
Although the Chinese prototype is currently in the demonstration phase, the scale of investment in research suggests a quick pace of progress. If the Hunan engineers manage to solve the problem of long -term power supply in a small block, and at the same time maintain flight stability with strong gusts of wind, then a new generation of devices common to the army, rescue and public order services will appear on the horizon. Potential applications not only include direct support of units on the battlefield, but also: monitoring of natural disasters, searching for people missing in hardly available terrain.
The economic aspect is also important. The production of drones with a millimeter scale requires advanced assembly lines and extremely precise components, which can raise costs.
At the same time, mass implementation of such constructions by one of the global technological powers will naturally increase pressure on competitive producers in Europe and North America. The race after the smallest and most reliable unmanned aerial artist is already ongoing – and the mosquito drone shown in television cameras can only be the beginning of this evolution.
New technology, new doctrines
The introduction of microdrons will also force a correction of military tactics. Instead of individual large unmanned units, a mini -platform swarm will appear, which commanders will have to manage in real time.
Soft-kill competences also enter the game-drone detection and neutralization systems that have previously focused mainly on larger constructions. The response to the machine’s limestone may be networks of acoustic sensors, short -range radars antennas or even specialized protective fabrics for staff – experts note.
