Chaos on the Italian railway during the games. Authorities reveal shocking reasons
Another act of sabotage on the Italian railway. Burned cables caused great delays between Rome, Naples and Florence. The Winter Games are taking place in the background.
Rail traffic in the heart of Italy was seriously disrupted on Saturday, February 14. Trains on key routes experienced delays of over an hour.
Chaos on the Italian railway. The perpetrators acted deliberately
Difficulties occurred, among others: on trains connecting Rome with Naples and Rome with Florence. Almost all passengers who wanted to get from the north to the south of Italy (or vice versa) had to be patient, because many connections were delayed by at least several dozen minutes.
As it turned out, the cause of the disruption was damage to the cables and their burning. The Italian services have no doubt that it was a deliberate act. – These are disgusting criminal acts against workers and all of Italy. We strongly condemn the perpetrators because what they did could have had dramatic consequences for the entire Italian community and endangered our safety, said Matteo Salvini, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport.
The politician emphasized that “in connection with the railway incidents, it was decided to strengthen control and protection in order not only to track down the perpetrators, but also to avoid similar incidents in the future.”
Sabotage on the railways due to Winter Winter 2026?
In this context, it is worth recalling that this is not the first incident of this type on Italian railways. Last week (February 7), railway infrastructure near Bologna was damaged. At that time, train delays reached up to 2.5 hours. The perpetrators turned out to be members of one of the anarchist groups. A few days later, train traffic in Lombardy was disrupted. In this case, there were also serious suggestions that it may be an act of sabotage.
Especially since the Winter Olympics are underway in Italy. Even before the event began, the Italian services were put on alert for appropriate security. According to estimates, up to 400,000 tourists were to visit Milan alone during Winter Olympics 2026.
