A traditional waffle instead of a sandwich and other types of drinks included in the price – this is how KLM’s catering in economy class will change.
More and more airlines are looking for savings by gradually introducing fees for additional services. While low-cost airlines only include a randomly assigned seat in the ticket price, traditional carriers usually offered a bit more, e.g. free seat selection or refreshments.
No more free sandwiches on KLM planes
“Even on the shortest flights we serve snacks and drinks. On longer European routes we will also offer a fresh sandwich,” the airlines say on their website.
From October this year, they will introduce a new on-board service offer called “Grand Café KLM”. nltimes.nl reports that passengers will no longer receive free cheese sandwiches during longer journeys around Europe. They will also have to pay for beer, wine and soda.
It is worth noting that KLM will maintain free refreshments on shorter routes, including coffee, tea, water, orange juice and the traditional Dutch stroopwafel. On-board service on intercontinental flights will not change. The decision to change was made after testing a new catering model for economy class passengers.

“The introduction of the new offer is a response to both the broader trend observed among European full-service airlines and the growing expectations of travelers for greater choice and flexibility,” the airline explains. You can read between the lines that the idea is to offer more attractive ticket prices at the expense of richer refreshments.
The new menu includes options that can be ordered before the flight, such as a poke bowl or Caesar salad, and on board KLM will offer a variety of menu products available immediately, including a salmon and egg wrap, or yogurt with fruit and seeds, as well as a wide selection of drinks.
The new catering offer will be available on all flights in the carrier’s European network, including routes from Poland to Amsterdam. The airline is present in five cities in Poland: Gdańsk, Kraków, Poznań, Warsaw and Wrocław, from where it offers regular flights to the capital of the Netherlands.
The media overseas also reported the end of an era in the on-board offer – Hawaiian Airlines passengers will no longer receive a hot meal.
