The president signed the act on June pensions. Benefits 95,000 people from 2009–2019 will be converted and raised again.

President Karol Nawrocki signed an act regarding the so -called June pensions. The new regulations solve the problem of low benefits of people who retired in June in 2009–2019.

New recipes

Pursuant to the Act, the Social Insurance Institution will again determine the amount of pensions and family pensions after persons who were granted the right to a pension in June. Importantly, the conversion will take place automatically – without the need to submit the application by the recipients.

The mechanism assumes that the pension will be determined as if the application was submitted in May of a given year. At that time, additional quarterly valorisations were added to the base of the benefit, which in the case of June pensions were not taken into account. As a result, people who submitted the application in June received a lower benefit, sometimes even a few hundred zlotys per month. The Constitutional Tribunal drew attention to this inequality, indicating that the differentiation of the amount of pensions depending on the month of submitting the application is unfair.

Low benefits

The amendment introduces the principle that benefits after conversion cannot be lower than those paid so far. This means that each of the pensioners covered by the Act will gain a change.

The benefits in the new amount will be paid from 2026, when the regulations come into force. According to ZUS estimates, the Act will cover about 95,000 people. The cost of its implementation in the first year will be about PLN 287 million and will be entirely covered with the Social Insurance Fund.

The problem of the so -called June pensions appeared because by 2021 the regulations did not provide for additional quarterly valorisations in the case of applications submitted in June. Only the amendment from that year changed the rules permanently, thanks to which persons reaching retirement age in June are no longer exposed to lower benefits. However, the Act did not include people who retired in 2009–2019. Now their situation will be even.
