A decision has been made regarding the Champions League on TVP
Until recently, the Champions League was also broadcast on Polish Television, but in the 2023/2024 season, TVP lost its sublicense to broadcast these matches. As TVP director Jakub Kwiatkowski reported on Monday, “The Champions League is returning to Polish Television!” – he wrote on the X service (formerly Twitter).
“Under the agreement concluded with Canal+, which is the exclusive holder of UCL rights in Poland for the next three seasons, TVP will be able to broadcast selected UEFA Champions League matches in the 2024/25 season,” he added.
TVP Director: We are proud to provide free access
Telewizja Polska intends to broadcast the Champions League from the first round of the league phase. “In total, TVP will show 17 UEFA Champions League matches throughout the season. The broadcasts will take place on Wednesday evenings at 9:00 p.m. After each round, TVP Sport will also have a highlights magazine with all the goals,” Kwiatkowski informed.
A moment later, an official statement was published on the matter. – We are extremely proud that we can provide Polish viewers with free access to such prestigious competitions as the UEFA Champions League. This is a great enrichment of our programming offer and ensures unforgettable emotions. We are especially pleased that our viewers will have the opportunity to watch UEFA Champions League matches in a new exciting formula – said Tomasz Sygut, general director of Telewizja Polska.
New Champions League format
This season, the Champions League will debut in a new league format, with 36 teams participating. Each of the qualified teams will play 8 matches (four at home and four away). The novelty is that each of them will play against a different opponent. The opponents will be selected by drawing lots. The eight best teams from the group stage will advance directly to the 1/8 finals, while the teams from 9th to 24th places will fight for promotion to this round in the play-offs. The remaining teams will say goodbye to European cups. From the 1/8 finals, the classic cup system will apply – a match and a return.
The UEFA Champions League final will take place on 31 May 2025 in Munich.
