EC puts Apple Ultimatum

The European Commission threatened to make formal allegations if the company did not present satisfactory proposals until the next Thursday. Although both the EC and Apple refused to comment on official, it is known that the talks between the pages were tense and lasted for several weeks.

The website reminds that a fine of EUR 500 million is not the first clash of Apple with EU law. The company announced that it would appeal against her before the courts in Luxembourg. At the same time, she accused the regulators of discrimination and attempts to force her to “give technology for free”.

Technological giants under Brussels pressure

Apple, Google, Amazon and Meta were under the magnifying glass of the European Commission in connection with allegations of market position abuse. Apple was fined in the amount of EUR 1.8 billion for limiting competition in the music streaming segment on iPhones. Earlier, the Commission imposed penalties exceeding $ 8 billion on Google, obliged Apple to open the contactless payment system, and Amazon – to modify its sales platform. Investigations against Microsoft and Google are also underway. Brussels systematically enforces new regulations, seeking to increase the competitiveness of the digital market.

Meta punished under the new regulations

The latest decision of the Commission applies to the META company, to which EUR 200 million was imposed for a model of Facebook and Instagram, forcing users to choose between a fee for lack of advertising and consent to the processing of data for marketing purposes. This is one of the first sanctions used under the EU act with digital markets (DMA), which aims to reduce the dominance of the largest platforms and support smaller players. The proceedings against Apple and Meta lasted a year and is a clear signal that the European Union does not intend to tolerate monopolistic practices in the digital sector.
