Brilliant run in Chorzów! The brilliant Norwegian broke the 28-year-old world record!
Historical events are taking place at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Chorzów. The 28-year-old world record in the 3,000-meter race was broken by Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Norwegian media before the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, which is also a Diamond League meeting, predicted that Jakob Ingebrigtsen could break the world record. Let us recall that the 3000 meters are not run at the Olympic Games; the previous best result in this distance in the world was held by Daniel Komen. In 1996, the Kenyan achieved a time of 7:20.67. Despite the fact that 3000 m races are not run very often, it was still hard to believe that this result has not been broken in the last 28 years.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s description
From the very beginning of the competition in Chorzów, Ingebrigtsen imposed an incredible pace on his rivals. After a distance of two kilometers, it was clear that the representative of Norway was running for a result that would give him a world record. However, it was difficult to say whether this athlete would last until the end.
He wasn’t under much pressure from his rivals either, and it seemed that the pressure was too small. In the end, however, it was clear that he wasn’t losing his strength, and there was hope for the best result in history.
And so it happened! Jakob Ingebrigtsen achieved a time of 7:17.55 s. To the great applause of over 40 thousand spectators he reached the finish line with a record result! After finishing the race he could not believe what he had done. At the finish line he was immediately hugged by Marcin Lewandowski, our former excellent middle distance runner, who was on the pitch during the competition.
The audience was great in Chorzów
We have already mentioned that a lot of spectators sat at the Silesian Stadium. The organizers informed that 42,357 spectators watched the track and field competitions. The fans cannot be disappointed with the level presented by the athletes. During Sunday’s competitions, several meeting records were already broken.
