Blue-green algae bloom in the Baltic Sea. Three popular bathing areas closed

Red flags have been displayed on three beaches in the Tri-City. The reason is a bloom of dangerous bacteria in the sea.

On June 26, a ban on bathing was introduced at three bathing areas in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. Red flags were hung on the beaches in Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia. The restrictions are related to the bloom of cyanobacteria in the sea, dangerous bacteria that cause skin irritation and food poisoning. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict how long selected bathing areas will be closed.

Bathing ban in Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia

As of Wednesday, June 26, it is not possible to swim on beaches in the Tri-City. Red flags were hung on the beach in Gdynia Śródmieście, at Łazienki Południowe and in Sopot, and on the beach at the pier in Gdańsk Brzeźno. The reason for the ban is the first bloom of cyanobacteria this year. “You can only swim safely at Gdańsk Stogi,” we read in the information provided on the website of Radio Gdańsk. This is bad news for tourists, who will flock to the Baltic beaches at the beginning of the season, which officially begins on July 1. It is impossible to predict how long the bathing areas will be closed.

Why are cyanobacteria dangerous?

Cyanobacteria are, in addition to the uncertain weather, the biggest bane of holidaymakers choosing Polish beaches. These dangerous autotrophic bacteria are created when the conditions outside are perfect for a seaside holiday – high temperature and no wind. This is the kind of weather that has been pleasing beachgoers on the coast for the past few days, and it’s not over yet. An African heat wave is currently arriving in Poland. Temperatures in Pomerania may reach thirty degrees until Sunday.

Bathing in the sea during a cyanobacterial bloom is risky for our health. These organisms contain strong toxins, and contact with the contaminated water in which they are found can lead to skin irritations and digestive problems. Not only is the water itself dangerous, but also the air above the body of water in which they are found.
