Big protests on Poles' beloved island. Beachgoers could be in shock

The holiday island has once again seen residents protesting overtourism. This time, local activists have blocked a popular swimming spot.

The island, popular among Poles, has once again become a site of protests against too many visitors. Local activists have blocked the beach in the capital of Majorca so that residents can enjoy their vacation on the coast in peace. The conflict in the Balearic Islands between visitors from abroad and residents has been escalating for several months. The situation is serious not only in Majorca, but also in Ibiza, famous for its loud parties.

Another round of protests in Mallorca

The residents of Majorca protest almost every week against the tourists who are worsening the quality of life on the island. Activists associated with local organizations gather not only on the streets of the cities, but also in crowded bathing areas. On Sunday, August 11, dissatisfied Spaniards went to the Playa de Palma beach in the capital of the island, which is besieged by foreign visitors. “Stop the destruction of Majorca” and “Let’s take over our beaches” – these were some of the slogans that could be found on the banners this time. Then the entire gathered crowd jumped into the sea together. The protesters are demanding that the government introduce limits on visitors. Unfortunately, they have not yet seen even some of their demands fulfilled.

The number of tourists is growing

“In 2023, the Balearic Islands were visited by around 14 million foreign visitors. This year, just before the holidays, the number of foreign tourists exceeded 6 million, which means an increase of 8 percent,” we read in the Spanish media. Palma de Mallorca is the first place to which foreign visitors fly. Many of them stay in the town, traveling to nearby tourist attractions. This affects the high prices of real estate and the difficulties in using the city’s infrastructure. Being on the beaches is also becoming unbearable. Similar problems also affect smaller towns on the island.
