“Beach on the water” in a Polish city. A unique attraction for tourists

Jezioro w Kartuzach

Kartuzy will surprise tourists this year. – We have created, you could say, a beach a bit on the water – says mayor Mieczysław Gołuński.

Kartuzy has been struggling with the problem of polluted lakes for years. Residents could not use the swimming area, and the water condition in four city reservoirs left much to be desired. As rmf24.pl reminds, before the war the city was eagerly visited by tourists, there were many guesthouses, hotels and water pump rooms here.

Lake cleansing project. “One million cubic meters of sediment”

– At some point, the lakes were polluted by the rapidly developing city. The second, very important thing was the combined sewage system, i.e. both rainwater and sanitary sewage were in the pipelines. This simply caused overflow during heavy rainfall – recalls mayor Mieczysław Gołuński in an interview with RMF FM.

Now we can talk about a breakthrough, and within three years the main reservoir – Karczemne Lake – has been cleaned. – We pulled out a million cubic meters of sedimentwhich were all transported in an innovative way across the lakes to the sewage treatment plant. Special tanks and clarifiers were built there and the water was returned to the river, after cleaning, of course, and the sediments were sent to the fields, reports the mayor.

The lake cleansing project is worth PLN 60 million (PLN 51 million came from the National Fund for Environmental Protection). Interestingly, the new swimming pool is not only a space for swimming, but also includes the entire recreational infrastructure.

We have created, you could say, a beach a bit on the water. Of course, we also built promenades, connected them, and built the Kartuzianka catering facility, which also serves local water, said Mieczysław Gołuński. The official swimming season starts on July 1.
