Map of cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea. Where can’t you swim?

There is an interactive map with places marked in red where, among others, bloom of cyanobacteria, i.e. microorganisms that create a characteristic green foam at the edges of water reservoirs.

After selecting the appropriate one on the website swimming areas you can get a full condition report water. According to GIS data, currently the water is not suitable for use in the following bathing areas: Sopot – Łazienki Południowe I, Gdynia Śródmieście, Kusy Dwór (Czaplinek, Drawsko poviat, West Pomeranian Voivodeship), at Lake Pątnowskie in the Municipal Recreation Center Przystań Gosławice (Konin, Konin poviat, Greater Poland Voivodeship) and at ul. Fabryczna in Nowogród Bobrzański (Nowogród Bobrzański, Zielona Góra County, Lubusz Voivodeship).

Why do cyanobacteria appear in the Baltic Sea?

Zbigniew Zawadzki from the Pomeranian Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in an interview with TVN 24 explained the conditions under which cyanobacteria bloom in the Baltic Sea.

– Cyanobacteria appear in our country when it is warm, when there is no strong wind, precipitation or rain. This also results in weak water ripples, so cyanobacteria appear. And that’s what happened in recent days, Zawadzki said. As he added, a change in the weather is enough for them to disappear.

He also emphasized that “contact with water in which cyanobacteria blooms have been detected should be avoided”Because “this may have health consequences for humans and animals”.

People who bathe in such water or consume it may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, itchy and watery eyes or skin rash.
