“Baltic not too warm.” There has never been such cold water in May for decades

The latest map has been published on the network depicting extreme weather deviations in Europe. Internet users’ attention was particularly caught by the image of the Baltic – completely immersed in intense blue.
Although we are approaching the end of May, its water resembles a more winter reality than the spring aura.
The map published on May 20, 2025 by Copernicus Climate Change Service, which regularly provides analyzes regarding temperatures and atmospheric anomalies, caused a lot of discussion on the network. The illustration shows the temperatures of European waters, and among them the Baltic stands out as an extremely cold point.
The Baltic Sea surprises again
As specialists from Meteoprognoza.pl notice, “Baltic not too warm”. What’s more, they pointed out that cool conditions also control the Adriatic, the Black Sea and along the Greek coast. In these regions it will get warmer over time, but “you will have to wait a little for reaching a long -term average” – comments experts.
Although May is coming to an end, the water temperature in the Baltic Sea remains extremely low. The measurement of May 20 shows that with the Polish coast, water had only 0 degrees Celsius, and in the central part of the basin as much as -3 degrees Celsius.
For comparison – usually in May coastal water reaches 10-12 degrees, while at the high seas the temperature lasts within 2-8 degrees. The conclusions are clear – the current values are very different from the many years of average.
There will be time for bathing in the Baltic Sea
Lovers of sea baths should be patient. The best time to visit the Baltic Sea falls on July and August – then the water temperature reaches up to 17-22 degrees Celsius.
It is worth noting that May in 2025 is so far the coldest in 34 years, which explains why even at the end of spring water in the Baltic Sea resembles one pulled out of the fridge straight.
