Balcony rental for 9,000 euros. Tourists want to see a great spectacle from them
In Spain, balcony rentals are booming before Easter. Tourists have to pay huge amounts of money to see the spectacle.
Prices for renting a balcony in Spain are reaching record levels. Why do tourists decide to rent a piece of space for huge amounts of money? The reason is the spectacular, long-lasting processions of religious brotherhoods related to the celebration of Holy Week (Semana Santa). “On some balconies along the official procession route in Seville, a balcony with additional services, such as catering, costs up to EUR 9,000 for the entire week,” writes the Spanish-language portal Infobae.
Celebrates Semana Santa in Andalusia
In Andalusia, the capital of which is Seville, every year in the week before Easter there are ceremonial processions on the occasion of Semana Santa, attracting not only the faithful, but also tourists. The celebration begins on Palm Sunday, although preparations for the processions themselves usually take months. Similar events are also taking place in many other cities across the country.
In Seville, as many as seventy cofradias brotherhoods take part in the processions. Each of them has its own, often long-lasting history, as well as specific colors of robes and insignia. During the procession, members perform specific, theatrical roles. Men who carry monumental religious figures on their shoulders attract the most attention.
Do you want to see processions? You have to pay
Tourists who come to Andalusia on the occasion of Semana Santa are not always guaranteed a good view. In the crowd it is difficult to notice both the enormity of the decorations and the important details. More and more guests decide to rent balconies, but such pleasure costs a lot.
Advertisements with telephone numbers appeared on balcony railings along Seville’s main streets last week. While the average price for renting a balcony during Holy Week in 2024 reached PLN 6,000. euro per week (which was twice as high as three years earlier), in the spring of 2025 some owners are demanding up to PLN 9,000. euro. Outside the official procession route, where only a few brotherhoods appear, the balcony can be rented for just a few hundred euros. The highest prices are valid in the morning, on Good Friday.
The Seville Association of Real Estate Managers warns owners. It turns out that not everyone reports additional income from renting balcony space on Semana Santa, and this may result in financial penalties.
