An avalanche that occurred in the Val-d’Isere area in the French Alps killed three Estonian skiers. According to the rescue services, the victims belonged to a group of six people who were traveling outside the designated routes.

The website “Le Dauphine Libere” reported that the avalanche was 100 meters wide and 300 meters long. She took four skiers, one of whom was only partially buried, and the other three were completely under the mass of snow.

20 rescuers from Val-d’Isere and Tignes and seven specialized tracking dogs were mobilized for the rescue operation. The first of the injured was quickly rescued – he was conscious.

Unfortunately, the next three were found only after more than 30 minutes, which in the case of being buried by an avalanche means the chances of survival are minimal. Despite the efforts of rescuers and doctors, circulation and breathing could not be restored.

No avalanche detectors. A key mistake

The Estonian skiers who died did not have avalanche detectors, which are essential equipment for people traveling off-piste. As noted by the “Ouest France” portal, the lack of these devices significantly delayed the rescue operation.

Detectors allow you to quickly locate a person buried under snow, which is crucial for their survival.

Dangerous conditions in the Alps

According to information provided by the “Francebleu” portal, conditions in the Alps are currently extremely difficult. Heavy snowfall, combined with gusty winds, significantly increases the risk of avalanches.

The slope service appeals for caution and encourages skiers to use appropriate equipment, such as avalanche detectors, probes, shovels and backpacks with airbags. It is also recommended that people traveling off-piste use the help of experienced mountain guides.

Poles in Val-d’Isere

The Val-d’Isere region has been attracting many Polish tourists for years. According to reports from Poles currently in the Alps, artificial avalanches are triggered on the slopes to ensure the safety of the slopes. Nevertheless, the conditions leave much to be desired.

— Some routes are poorly prepared, you may encounter ice covered with snow or moguls that are difficult to overcome, reports one of the Polish skiers.

Injuries and illnesses are commonplace

Difficult conditions translate into numerous injuries among skiers. In one of the groups of 26 people, which included Poles, two serious injuries were reported: a broken arm and broken ribs.

— Unfortunately, a large part of the group also struggled with the flu, which immobilized several people for several days – added the participant of the trip.

An appeal for caution in the mountains

The tragedy in Val-d’Isere reminds us to be careful in the mountains. Equipping yourself with avalanche equipment, constantly monitoring weather reports and avoiding unmarked routes can save your life. As experts emphasize, avalanche safety training should be a priority for all skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

According to weather forecasts, the avalanche risk in the Alps will remain high for the next few days. Detailed information can be found on the websites of local weather stations and in announcements from regional rescue centers.
