After snowfall, avalanche danger level 1 was introduced in the Tatra Mountains. Tourists may be in danger

Avalanche danger level 1 is currently in force on Tatra trails. This is the lowest of three levels indicating danger in the mountains. Although snowfall is currently only possible with heavy loads in a few places, tourists should be careful. In the coming weeks, if snowfall continues, the danger level will be increased. Before heading to the mountains in winter, always check current weather conditions.

Winter has come to the Tatra Mountains

The last few days are a real paradise for winter lovers. Although residents and tourists could observe the first snowfall in the highest Polish mountains at the end of September, now it looks like the white powder is here to stay. Unfortunately, this involves the risk of an avalanche. Current conditions must be monitored before any mountain trip, even on potentially easy and safe trails.

From Thursday, November 19, the first, lowest level of threat from a three-level scale has been in force in the Tatra Mountains. What does this mean? As we read on the website lawiny.topr.pl, most mountain hiking enthusiasts should have no reason to worry.

Dangerous on difficult trails

The current avalanche danger level does not have to be an obstacle to trips to the lower parts of the mountains. However, if we plan to attack high peaks, we should be especially careful. Generally, the snow cover on the slopes is well-bound and stable.

Triggering an avalanche is possible, but it requires a large load. At the moment, this can be achieved in only a few places in the Tatra Mountains, on very steep or extreme slopes. It is also possible for small and medium-sized avalanches to descend spontaneously. However, the danger may be higher due to the wind. “Quite strong and gusty winds are still forecast, which may create new deposits of blown snow in any concave formations; such places should be considered potentially dangerous, especially those on grassy ground,” we read.
