Automotive giant with a huge loss. All for one reason

In 2024, Ford recorded an operational loss (EBIT) at $ 5.1 billion, mainly due to expensive investments in the development of electric vehicles.
Forecasts for 2025 are not optimistic, and the American giant may lose another $ 5.5 billion. Despite these results, the company still believes in the future of electromobility and focuses on the development of hybrids and cheap electricians.
Ford losses grow through electrification
In the latest financial report, Ford revealed that 2024 ended with a huge loss of $ 5.1 billion. The reason is investments in the development of electric cars, which – at least for now – do not bring profits. What’s more, analysts predict that this year’s loss can reach up to $ 5.5 billion.
Although financial results may cause concern, the company’s management emphasizes that the company effectively optimizes costs. An example is the $ 1.4 billion saved thanks to improvements in the production of Mach-E models.
The sale of electricians is growing, but far to the destination
Despite the huge investments in electromobility, Ford is still selling much more combustion cars. In 2024, the sale of electric cars in the US increased by 35 percent. to the level of 98 thousand units, and hybrid by over 40 percent, reaching 187 thousand copies. Meanwhile, internal combustion vehicles still dominate – the American concern sold them as much as 1.79 million last year.
Ford’s plans assumed that by 2026 the company would sell 2 million electricians. At the current growth rate, the implementation of this goal seems practically unreal.
New US administration is a threat to Ford?
Changing the US government’s policy regarding electromobility may further hinder Ford’s plans. Donald Trump’s administration withdraws from aggressive support for electric cars, and new customs duties on goods from Mexico can complicate the situation even more. The problem is, among others The production of Mustang Mach-E, which takes place in Mexico-and Trump plans to apply 25 % duties to the local products.
Ford does not give up electricians, but …
Ford began to gradually change the strategy. In August 2024, the company announced the resignation from the project of a large electric SUV, which was to compete with Tesla and Chinese BYD. The model with a range of 350 miles and the premiere planned for 2027. It will not be created ultimately.
However, this does not mean a total retardation from electromobility. Ford works on a new line of smaller and cheaper electricians, which are to cost a maximum of 30,000. dollars. The first models of this series will appear on the market over the next two years. Until then, the company intends to invest in the development of plug-in hybrids and expanding the range of electrified vehicles.
