Aryna Sabalenka wants Iga Świątek to succeed. Will the Belarusian do it?

Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka will drop to second place in the WTA ranking after the 2026 US Open. However, the Belarusian will play in the final in New York against… the new leader Yelena Rybakina.

So the question arises: why should Aryna Sabalenka lose her position? This results from the rules that apply when calculating points in the WTA ranking. And this is even more interesting, because it turns out that… it was moderately profitable for Sabalenka to win the US Open 2025.

How is this possible? At the same time, Elena Rybakina was eliminated in the fourth round of the competition in New York. For this reason, by defending the points gained in NYC in last year’s edition, even in the event of a final triumph, Sabalenka will only equalize what she won in points last year.

Kazaszka, regardless of the final battle, in the clash with the fourth round of the US Open 2025 – is and will be definitely a plus.

Aryna Sabalenka as Iga Świątek? Great emotions before the US Open final

There is no doubt that the scenario with the Sabalenka-Rybakina final is the best possible one, taking into account the current balance of power in women’s tennis. The Belarusian was the leader for 99 weeks. Previously, Iga Świątek was number 1. The Polish tennis player performed an interesting feat related to the fight for the title of the best ranking player in the world.

For the first time, Świątek became the leader of the WTA ranking on April 4, 2022. The Pole was number 1 for the next 75 weeks. Then Świątek was jumped by Sabalenka. It lasted eight weeks. However, the Pole had a great finish in the 2023 season, with a memorable victory in the WTA Finals. Thanks to this, Swiatek returned to the top of the rankings, where she remained for the next 50 weeks. After this period, Sabalenka took over the leadership position again and did not give it up until… September 14, 2026.

However, the Belarusian played very short-term this season. Therefore, it is difficult to find any injustice in the system of calculating world ranking points. Rybakina consistently built her result, winning several important events in 2026 – including the Grand Slam Australian Open.

However, one can be convinced, bordering on certainty, that Sabalenka will do everything to take away the leadership position from Kazakhstan. The Belarusian would thus repeat the trick that Świątek performed on the tennis player from Minsk at the crazy end of the 2023 season.

Whether this will actually happen, time will tell. The first installment of the battle between Sabalenka and Rybakina during the US Open 2026 final.
