Artificial intelligence is supposed to free us from household chores

Before we knew it, artificial intelligence has settled into our homes and pockets. It is already in an increasing number of smartphones, washing machines, refrigerators, televisions, and even vacuum cleaners. Interestingly, despite fears of losing one’s job or privacy violations, when it comes to home appliances, the majority of surveyed Poles (59%) have a positive attitude towards artificial intelligence.

According to the study “AI in household appliances” conducted by Zymetria on behalf of Samsung, 70% of respondents believe that AI makes performing daily duties easier. They also believe that this will give us more time for pleasure. The study was conducted in July 2024 on a representative sample of 1,000 Polish residents aged 18-64. What is the biggest challenge in daily duties and where do we see AI support in household appliances? The answer is surprising – preparing meals. As many as 39% of surveyed Poles see the potential of artificial intelligence in inventing recipes. Every second person thinks that keeping an eye on dishes in the oven is troublesome, and every third respondent indicated that AI could help deal with this problem. This is extremely important, as as many as 3/5 of respondents admit that they regularly open the oven to check the baking status, which not only takes time but also leads to heat loss and increased energy consumption. And despite this, burning occurs very often.

These are the needs, but what does the presence of AI in the home look like today?

Let’s take a look at Samsung’s activities in this area. When we bought the company’s top-of-the-range QLED TV 10 years ago, its processor already contained neural networks and artificial intelligence algorithms. Today, all models of Neo QLED, QLED, OLED and The Frame TVs, as well as the most advanced Excellence Line 8k AI, use artificial intelligence to improve the quality of the image, sound and even teach the TV how we like to watch sports, movies or news. The most advanced ones, such as the QN900D 8k AI, can recognize the type of sport we are watching and will run a special algorithm that will ensure that, for example, a ball in fast motion is perfectly visible. It will also recognize the type of game we are playing and select the image parameters accordingly.

AI has also made its way to smartphones, not just the flagship Galaxy S24 models, but also more Galaxy devices. Thanks to the update released in March, Galaxy S23, S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5, and Tab S9 users can also use the Galaxy AI feature on their devices. The great popularity of this solution is evidenced by the fact that 8.8 million users have downloaded the update enabling the use of Galaxy AI on even more Galaxy devices.

Multitasking smartphone

Smartphones are communication and knowledge, TV is entertainment, but also, for example, managing a smart home, but the most time is taken up by repetitive, household tasks. Global Samsung research conducted in October 2023 shows that planning household tasks takes up as much as 86% of the time we could normally spend on actually doing them. This state, referred to as “invisible burden”, has a negative impact on our well-being, causing anxiety and stress even before we start working. The study, which involved over 6,000 respondents from various European countries, including Poland, showed that the average person is responsible for at least seven different household chores, taking up up to 30 hours a week – which is almost a full-time job. Laundry, baking, shopping and time management can be improved using AI.

For Samsung, AI is one of its top priorities right now. In 2022, the company announced its intention to invest over $350 billion in new technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. In 2023, it announced the creation of its own generative AI platform called Samsung Gauss, consisting of three models: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image. Artificial intelligence is intended to facilitate our daily functioning, improve the quality of entertainment, and drive the development of technology.
