Polish trains travel around 19,576 km of tracks, and the railway in Poland is gaining popularity. In 2024, only PKP Intercity trains transported 78.5 million passengers – by as much as 15 percent. more than a year earlier and by as much as 33 percent more than two years ago. It is hard to believe, but at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, the Polish railway transported a billion passengers.
The railway withdraws from the strategy of extinguishing demand
The most difficult for railways were the 90s. The way to get out of financial problems was to be “extinguishing demand”. First, the timetable was removed outside the peak or the arrival times were moved so that passengers could no longer make it to work or school. Gradually, the number of courses was also thinned, travel times were extended and no convenient change was taken care of. This is how 1/4 of the Polish railway network was liquidated. Over the past 30 years, the passenger rail has stopped reaching about 50 Polish cities with at least 10,000 inhabitants.
20 years later, the railway is considered the most ecological means of public transport taking into account CO2 emissions per kilometer traveled by the passenger. It has 4 times less CO2 emissions than road transport and nearly 5 times smaller than air transport. Despite the difficulties, Poles still like to travel by train. Traveling around Poland on the most expensive Express Intercity and Pendolino trains in most cases is more expensive than driving a car. But in other types of trains the matter looks quite different.
Depending on the type of train and the permissions, you can benefit from many discounts when traveling by rail. The ticket can be 95 % cheaper. (e.g. guide, guardian of a dependent person), 93 percent (e.g. blind people), 78 percent (e.g. soldiers), 51 percent (e.g. students up to 26 years old), 49 percent (e.g. children and youth in TLK), 37 percent (e.g. veterans, pensioners), 33 percent (academic teachers) or cost nothing at all (e.g. police, border guards).
