Are the Olympic Games in Poland real? “We have no financial barriers”

Sławomir Nitras

On Friday (i.e. October 25), the topic of the Olympic Games, which were to be held in Poland in the summer of 2040, returned. The following spoke: Sławomir Nitras.

Looking at the chronology, the idea of organizing the summer Olympic Games in Poland was already announced in 2023. It was then announced that the Polish side would make efforts to host the event in 2036. These words were spoken by, among others, the then Minister of Sport and Tourism Kamil Bortniczuk and accompanying him President Andrzej Duda.

Sławomir Nitras on the possibilities of organizing the Olympic Games in Poland

The next approach is a new government, the year 2024 and the solution proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the current Minister of Sports, Sławomir Nitras. Poland would like to organize the Olympics in 2040.

Minister Nitras met with journalists during Friday’s event, confirming Poland’s willingness to organize the summer Olympic Games.

– We need to build a national sports development strategy. This strategy is called Warsaw 2040, but in fact it is not a strategy for making the Olympics, it is a strategy for changing Polish sport to make the Olympics possible in Poland. We have no financial barriers, we have organizational, structural, certain infrastructural and social barriers that we must overcome to move forward (…) We spend almost 1%. for sports from public money. This is really big money. You can therefore ask the question not whether we can afford the Olympics, but why we have not been able to afford the Olympics so far. We have really good budgets, but we spend the money ineffectively and this is the task before us. In terms of public money spent on sports, we do not lag behind wealthy European countries, admitted Minister Nitras at the Prime Minister’s Chancellery.

During the meeting, the head of the sports ministry was accompanied by, among others, former NBA basketball player Marcin Gortat, tennis player Magda Linette, two-time Olympic vice-champion in mountain biking Maja Włoszczowska and four-time gold medalist in race walking Robert Korzeniowski. It is clear that the sports community would like to hold the Olympic Games 2040 in Poland.
