Are shops open on January 1st? Where will I shop?
January 1 is New Year’s Day, which for many is an opportunity to relax after New Year’s Eve madness. But what to do when you run out of basic products at home that day?
Where can you shop? We present a practical guide, including open stores, gas stations and shopping alternatives.
January 1st. Are the shops open?
Well, no. On January 1, there is a statutory trade ban in Poland, which means that most large stores and shopping malls will be closed. This applies to networks such as:
-
Ladybird
-
Lidl
-
Auchan
-
Carrefour
-
Dino
-
Net
-
Kaufland
-
Polo Market
-
Daisy
-
Aldi
The trade ban also covers smaller establishments, except for those where the owner himself stands behind the counter.
Shops that can be open
However, some places will be available to customers, especially those excluded from the trade ban. Here is a list of possible options:
a) Gas stations
Gas stations are a reliable choice for a day off from trading. In addition to fuel, they offer basic food, drinks and snacks. Popular chains such as Orlen, BP and Shell will be open 24 hours a day.
b) Small local shops
Local stores where the seller is the owner may operate on January 1. It’s worth checking out local stores in your area.
c) Franchise networks
Some branches belonging to chains such as Żabka or Carrefour Express may be open if they operate on a franchise basis. However, opening hours depend on the owner’s decision.
Shopping alternatives
a) On-Demand Delivery Apps
Although restrictions also apply to suppliers on January 1, apps such as Glovo and Wolt can offer a limited number of products from local stores and restaurants. It is worth checking their availability in your area.
b) Online shopping
If you need products that do not need to be delivered immediately, you can use online shopping. Although deliveries do not take place on January 1, you can order goods for the next business day.
