Are Polish cities protected against air attack? After the general’s surprising words and questions from Mariusz Błaszczak, the Ministry of National Defense explains the principles of defense.
Deputy head of the Armament Agency, Brig. Gen. Dr. Eng. Michał Marciniak said in the “Dobry Wieczór Polsko” program on Polsat News that large cities in Poland are not covered by anti-missile defense. As he explained, no appropriate systems are currently deployed around the agglomeration. However, the general noted that the situation may change after the country enters the “war phase”. Then the cities would probably be protected. The deployment of the systems would be determined by a list of priorities and an indication of the facilities that are key to the country’s security.
Mariusz Błaszczak asks about the security of Warsaw
Former Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak commented on the military’s statement. He admitted that the general’s words surprised him very much and demanded explanations from the Ministry of National Defense regarding the protection of the capital.
The politician stated that anti-missile defense in Warsaw was activated during the PiS government. In his opinion, General Marciniak’s statement shows that the capital is currently not protected, and the authorities must decide where to deploy defense systems.
The Ministry of National Defense responds: the system does not rely on batteries around each city
The Ministry of National Defense assured that the Polish Armed Forces have various capabilities enabling them to protect designated facilities, including urban agglomerations, against air threats. The activities are particularly intense in eastern and central Poland, and allies are also involved.
The ministry emphasized that the country’s air defense is an integrated system. It does not assume permanent deployment of missile batteries around every large city. Individual elements are used depending on the current situation, threat assessment and state defense priorities.
Can systems be moved quickly?
According to the Ministry of National Defense, the army can increase readiness, activate appropriate assets and move them to protect designated areas and facilities. At the same time, the ministry noted that for security reasons it does not disclose the exact location of the systems, their readiness or plans for use.
