Andrzej Duda paid a visit to the Naval Operations Center – Maritime Component Command in Gdynia. During the meeting, the president learned about the current situation in connection with the ongoing allied BALTOPS-24 exercises in the Baltic Sea. – The efficient functioning of our navy within the structures of the North Atlantic Alliance is of key importance for our security – emphasized the head of state.
Andrzej Duda: The Baltic Sea is of key importance
– We are preparing for any offensive actions from the Russian side. We all know that, unfortunately – especially in recent months since the Russian aggression against Ukraine. We are constantly dealing with Russian provocations. First of all, aviation provocations, mainly in the Baltic Sea region – Andrzej Duda pointed out.
The president noted that “the Baltic Sea is of key importance.” – These are our seaports, our critical infrastructure. This means maintaining the possibility of trade and the possibility of supplying combat and military support by sea, if necessary, he said. – This is a matter of absolutely strategic interests of the Republic of Poland and therefore the efficient functioning of our navy within the structures of the North Atlantic Alliance and the interoperability of NATO forces in the Baltic region are of key importance for our security – he added.
On the same day, Andrzej Duda participated in a meeting with soldiers at the Formoza Military Unit base. Photos appeared online showing the president in full uniform, riding a motorboat with soldiers.
BALTOPS–24 – what are the exercises?
Over 50 warships, 25 aircraft, 60 helicopters and almost 12,000 people will take part in the BALTOPS-24 exercises. NATO soldiers. The tasks performed by the soldiers will include demining, fire support, anti-submarine warfare, convoying and landing. Training in joint response to crisis situations is also to be an important element.
The main goal of BALTOPS 2024 is to demonstrate strategic cooperation between NATO partners at the tactical and operational levels. For the first time, the BALTOPS exercise will focus on the protection of undersea infrastructure.
BALTOPS–24 will take place largely around the Swedish island of Gotland, which is one of the areas in the Baltic Sea most at risk of Russian aggression. In addition, soldiers will also exercise in the vicinity of Stockholm, the Gulf of Bothnia, the Gulf of Riga, in Germany, Lithuania and Poland. The exercise will last until June 22.
