An airport the likes of which the world has never seen will be built here. It will be located on an artificial island
A real treat for tourists is being created on the Yellow Sea. It will be the world’s largest airport located on an artificial island.
The new airport in Dalian, China, will beat the airports in Hong Kong and Kansai. It will soon become the world’s largest airport located entirely on an artificial island. Passengers will have to wait a while to use the port. Building such an investment at sea is quite a challenge, so the opening of the first zone is planned only for 2035. The reason for this project is to achieve full capacity of the Dalian airport, which is located on land.
China is starting a gigantic project
“The country’s largest maritime airport is slowly rising from the sea level, like a sunrise in the east,” it was written on the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International port’s profile on Chinese social media. Here, where recently there were only sea waves, an island is growing, where an international airport will be opened in 2035. It will be the largest place of this type in the world, larger than the airport-islands in Hong Kong and Japanese Kansai (however, it is far from the real “land” record holders).
It was not without obstacles
The reason for building the airport in such an unusual place is the overcrowding of the current airport. Dalian, located in the western part of the country, has 7.5 million inhabitants and is characterized by dense buildings. A significant enlargement of the current airport, as in the case of Warsaw Chopin, could therefore prove difficult to implement. However, Dalian already has experience in implementing water investments – the metropolis is one of the largest seaports in the world. There is a large complex of commercial and fishing ports, a naval base and numerous schools educating future shipbuilders and engineers. Nevertheless, implementing the project was not easy. “Construction posed great challenges as the project is characterized by complex geological conditions, high drilling difficulty and high demand for quality amid a tight construction schedule,” said Li Xiang, chief engineer of Dalian Airport Construction and Development, as quoted by CNN.
