Carrefour is meeting the needs of its customers. The French retail chain will soon launch a new service, namely alcohol will be available for purchase online. Where will this option be available?

The new service will be available to customers from September 27, 2024. Online alcohol sales at Carrefour will be available only to registered users of the store. Customers must confirm that they are over 18 years old to view and order alcoholic beverages.

Only in one city

Initially, the new service will only be available in Krakow. Orders can be picked up in person at the store or ordered for home delivery. They will then be delivered by a courier. Carrefour notes, however, that this option will only be available for selected postal codes. Detailed information about the postal codes covered by the service will be available on September 27, 2024, the day sales start. On that day, the new regulations of the Carrefour online sales platform will come into force.

It is not yet known whether and when Carrefour will expand its online alcohol sales beyond the capital of Małopolska. The chain has over 800 brick-and-mortar stores throughout the country, so at first the new service will cover a very small percentage of potential customers.

Controversy over online alcohol sales

Online alcohol sales have been the subject of legal disputes. A landmark judgment by the Supreme Administrative Court in 2022 confirmed that brick-and-mortar stores offering online alcohol sales do not lose their licenses, paving the way for initiatives such as Carrefour.

Online Alcohol Sales: Are They Growing or Falling?

Alcohol sales in Poland in recent years have been characterized by mixed trends, depending on the type of alcohol. Overall, the alcoholic beverage market continues to grow, but there are some significant changes in consumer preferences.

Beer: It is the leader in terms of sales volume, but has seen declines in some segments, such as traditional alcoholic beers. On the other hand, sales of non-alcoholic beers are growing and are becoming increasingly popular, reflecting changing consumption habits.)

Spirits: Vodka remains the second most popular alcohol, but its sales are stable, without major increases. On the other hand, interest in whiskey, rum, gin and tequila is growing dynamically, especially in the premium segments, which is due to the growing drinking culture and the premiumization trend.

Wine: Wine sales are growing, although the pace of growth has slowed somewhat in recent years due to inflation. Sparkling wines such as prosecco are particularly popular, and the non-alcoholic wine category is starting to gain ground.

In summary, alcohol sales in Poland are generally growing, but consumer preferences are shifting towards premium and non-alcoholic products, which is influencing the shape of the market.
