Airport paralysis in Europe. Poles also feel the problems

The activity of the Etna volcano in Italy has been making its presence felt for a long time. There is a serious alarm again regarding Sicily, the island where the crater is located. In the summer, tourists flock there in large numbers, but on Monday, August 10, they have to face difficulties.

All arrivals to Catania airport have been suspended until at least 5 p.m. The reason is volcanic ash floating over the city, which limits visibility and poses a threat. This is the result of another eruption of Etna. The situation is being monitored by local services and they have raised the highest level of alarm, the so-called red alert.
Several lava flows emerged from volcanic vents at altitudes of 2,750 and 2,360 m, creating vast lava fields, as reported by the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
Difficulties on August 10 will affect, among others: tourists from Poland. According to the fly4free.pl website, not only arrivals to the airport are suspended, but also departures from many European countries are suspended. According to the plan, the following aircraft were to land in Catania: Wizz Air Ryanair and KM Malta Airlines machines.

At this point, over 150 canceled takeoffs and landings and about 20,000 injured passengers have been reported. Anyone planning to get there on August 10 must be patient or cancel their trip and reschedule it. If you are just deciding whether to buy flights, it is good to monitor the situation. Similar complications have occurred there quite often recently.
“As this situation has a significant impact on airport operations, we kindly ask passengers to check the status of their flight with the airline before proceeding to the airport,” said the flight operator, SAC.
The Flightradar24 system shows that so far some connections have been redirected to other airports, e.g. Cagliari or Palermo – this happened, among others, with Wizz Air’s night connection from Gdańsk. Passengers flying from Katowice to Catania with Ryanair finally landed in Trapani. The morning flights of Wizz Air to Katowice (flight W61042) and Ryanair to Modlin (FR5331) and Katowice (FR6372) did not depart from Italy.
Delta Airlines passengers from New York also found themselves in a difficult situation – they reached Rome instead of Sicily.
