Activists blockade major airport. All flights suspended
Activists climbed through a hole in the fence and glued themselves to the airport tarmac. Due to the ongoing demonstration in Frankfurt, all flights were suspended.
Another German airport has been blocked by climate activists. Following a protest at Cologne Airport on Wednesday morning, members of the Last Generation movement also halted traffic at Frankfurt Airport. Passengers who were planning to fly from the German airport must prepare for significant delays. Airport authorities advise passengers whose flights have been canceled to stay at home. However, flights are gradually resuming.
Activists blocked the airports
Just a few days after the Microsoft outage that grounded planes around the world for hours, Germany is experiencing further disruptions for passengers. First, members of the Last Generation movement cut a hole in the fence at Cologne/Bonn Airport on Wednesday morning and stuck themselves to the runway, halting passenger traffic for several hours. Today, climate activists used the same method to break into another German airport. Frankfurt International Airport has been blocked, where the association is protesting. Environmentalists warn that this is not their last step towards changing transport policy and persuading the German government to phase out coal, oil and gas by 2030. “This was just the beginning. We will repeat this in Germany, Europe and the world in the next few weeks,” said Last Generation activist Ronja Kuenkler.
Flight operations are being resumed
“Due to the ongoing demonstration at the airport, flights are currently suspended,” the airport reported via X on Thursday morning. At the time, airport authorities advised passengers whose flights had been cancelled to stay at home. As Flightradar.com reports, hundreds of flights bound for Germany’s busiest airport had been diverted to other airports in the country by 9 a.m. According to the latest information on the airport’s website, flight operations are gradually resuming.
