A well-known bank issued an urgent announcement. Customers can fall into a trap
Bank Pekao warns customers against a new wave of fraud. Criminals impersonate a bank and exert pressure.
Bank Pekao SA published a warning regarding further methods of criminal activity. As indicated, recently there has been an increase in fraud cases in which attackers impersonate employees of banks and public institutions. The purpose of such actions is to instill trust and persuade the victim to follow the instructions.
Criminals contact customers by phone or e-mail. They inform about alleged security incidents, attempts to extort credit or threats to the money accumulated in the account. They often argue that the situation requires immediate response. To make their story credible, they send fake IDs in messages or show them during conversations.
How criminals work
Fraudsters most often present themselves as employees of the bank, security departments or institutions cooperating with the bank. They also use artificial intelligence tools in their activities, thanks to which they prepare professional-looking documents. This is to make telephone or e-mail contact seem credible.
One of the most frequently used methods is time pressure. Criminals encourage you to take immediate action, for example to make a transfer to a supposedly safe account or to provide the BLIK code. In this way, they try to obtain login details, authorization codes or take over funds accumulated in the account.
Bank Pekao warns customers
The announcement clearly states that Bank Pekao SA does not send customers photos or scans of its employees’ ID cards. It was also emphasized that NBP does not maintain accounts for natural persons. The bank also reminded that no financial institution asks the customer to provide the BLIK code or to make an urgent transfer to secure the money. Such demands should always raise suspicion.
To avoid falling victim to fraud, do not provide login details, BLIK codes or card details at the request of the interlocutor. You should also not install any applications at his request or act under the influence of fear and haste. If in doubt, stop the conversation and contact the bank yourself. If fraud is suspected, experts recommend immediately blocking cards, blocking access to electronic banking, contacting the hotline, reporting the matter to the police or prosecutor’s office and informing the bank about the incident.
