A unique attraction in the Polish city is now open. This is an important point in European history

Centrum Dowodzenia Twierdza Przemyśl

The opening of Przemyśl’s newest attraction is behind us. The Command Center will be one of the most important places in the region.

On September 19, one of the city’s most important attractions opened in Przemyśl. The long-awaited investment, worth PLN 12.5 million, Command Center – Przemyśl Fortress, has finally been presented to residents and tourists. The modern educational facility is intended to familiarize guests with the history of one of the most powerful fortresses in Europe in an interesting way.

Fortress in Przemyśl

At the beginning of the 20th century, Przemyśl was a real power. It was here, in a small town in Podkarpacie, in what was then Galicia, that the third largest fortress in Europe was located (after the fortress in Antwerp in Belgium and Verdun in France). Although numerous city fortifications ceased to play a significant role after World War I, they can still be seen in the city today. However, over the years some of the military facilities fell into ruin. Their condition was also caused by three sieges in 1914-1915 during the Austrian-Russian battles. Until 1920, several thousand soldiers died in Przemyśl on both fronts and are now buried in several cemeteries in Podkarpacie.

Command Center opened

The modern Command Center – Przemyśl Fortress is to be the point from which to start exploring the city and fortifications. Here, we will learn about the rich history of Przemyśl using virtual elements, models, holograms, scenography (including a detailed reconstruction of a period railway carriage), photos and archival films. One of the rooms was entirely dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers. “In addition, a teaching point has been prepared in the building for children and school youth, where classes will be held during the groups’ stay, presenting the topic of World War I and Przemyśl against its background,” we read on the website of the City of Przemyśl. The facility will also include an observation deck, a 5D cinema, and in the near future also a restaurant. The center is open from Monday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The price of a regular ticket is PLN 20, and a reduced ticket is PLN 10.
