A surprising decision regarding the CPK. We know who will build the airport in Baranów
The government has made a key decision on who will be responsible for the construction and management of the largest airport in Poland. The surprise is big.
The government decided that the strategic partner of the Central Communication Port (CPK) will be Polish Airports (PPL). This is a groundbreaking decision that changes previous plans related to the strategic investor for the airport part of the project. Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak announced that the CPK will be implemented as a completely Polish initiative, which emphasizes its national importance.
A Polish company takes over
Minister Klimczak announced that PPL will acquire up to 49% of shares in the new company CPK-Lotnisko. The signed letter of intent between PPL and CPK means the abandonment of previous talks with the French-Australian consortium and the South Korean operator of the airport in Seoul. – “We want the largest infrastructure project in Poland to be coordinated by a Polish company,” said the minister.
PPL is to allocate up to PLN 9 billion for the construction of the airport. The transaction is scheduled to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2025, when details of the airport management model and the investment agreement will be prepared. Filip Czernicki, president of CPK, assured that the project will bring profits already in the first year of operation.
Expansion of Chopin Airport
In parallel with the construction of the CPK, the government announced the urgent modernization of Warsaw Chopin Airport. The current airport is to be expanded so that by the time the CPK opens, it can handle up to 30 million passengers a year. The cost of this investment is estimated at PLN 1.6 billion. The works are scheduled to start in 2026 and be completed in 2029.
The decision to include Polish Airports in the management of the CPK project emphasizes the government’s commitment to the implementation of this key investment. The exclusion of foreign entities from the process means that both the construction and management of the new central airport will remain in Polish hands. This is a symbolic step that strengthens the national character of the project and its strategic importance for the country.
