Polish fans had to wait until Wednesday (i.e. August 7) for the first gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris for the Polish team. It was won by Aleksandra Mirosław, world record holder and a big favorite in the competition in the speed climbing. The Polish athlete did not disappoint expectations. What’s more, it was a beautiful day for both Polish representatives. The bronze medal was won by Aleksandra Kałucka.
Paris 2024: Aleksandra Mirosław with gold, Aleksandra Kałucka with bronze
The Polish champion defeated the Chinese Deng in the final, achieving a time of 6.10 seconds. Her rival gave it her all, achieving a personal best on the wall – 6.18 s. Kałucka defeated the Indonesian representative Sallsabillah. The Pole achieved a result of 6.53 s. A moment earlier, Kałucka was even faster, but in the semi-final she lost to… Mirosław, in the Polish fight for the Olympic final. Kałucka beat her personal best, reaching the top of the wall with a time of 6.34 s. Mirosław achieved 6.19 s then.
The Olympic medals for Polish women were presented by two-time Olympic vice-champion, Maja Włoszczowska. The mountain biker stood on the podium of the games in 2008 (Beijing) and 2016. Włoszczowska was a specialist in the so-called cross-country competition.
Dąbrowski’s Mazurka was performed for the first time at the 2024 Olympic Games. It was an exceptionally moving moment, with both Mirosław and Kałucka shedding tears.
Six medals for the Polish team at the Paris Olympics
Poland has six Olympic medals to its name from the competition in the French capital.
The first to win the Olympic vice-championship was Klaudia Zwolińska, a whitewater kayaker. The bronze medal was then added by the Polish epee fencers, who snatched the team success by winning the match for 3rd place against the Chinese after a great fight.
The men responded to the women’s successes. The bronze medal was won by rowers, the Polish doubles team consisting of Dominik Czaja, Fabian Barański, Mirosław Ziętarski and Mateusz Biskup. On Friday, August 2, Iga Świątek added a bronze medal. She was the first in the history of the Polish Olympic movement to win an Olympic medal in tennis.
The next two medals were successes in the speed climbing, two Aleksandras – Mirosław with gold and Kałucka with bronze.
Poland also has a “virtual” medal, not yet included in the official record, but already certain – looking at the competition. We are talking about the success of boxer Julia Szeremeta. The Polish athlete found herself in the best four in the 57 kg category. And since there are no fights for bronze in boxing, the Polish competitor can already enjoy a place on the podium at the 2024 Olympics.
