A revolution in cheap flights in Masovia? There is a new idea for Chopin Airport
The expansion of Chopin Airport is expected to cost over PLN 2 billion and may mean significant changes in the operation of cheap flights in Masovia. The plans include, among others: new terminal.
The modernization of the capital’s Chopin Airport has been talked about for a long time. The expansion of Okęcie is expected to cost nearly PLN 2.4 billion. More details were revealed on Thursday by the Wirtualny Nowy Przemysł website. Polskie Porty Lotnicze is considering building a new terminal – a bridgehead for low-cost airlines and charters at the largest Polish airport.
New terminal at Warsaw Chopin Airport
Andrzej Ilków, president of Polish Airports, outlined these plans in an interview with WNP.pl. When asked whether PPL expected greater interest from low-cost airlines in connections from Chopin Airport, he said “definitely yes”.
“We notice greater interest from low-cost carriers in our airport, which is a response to their expectations. However, we do not forget about our key role as an air hub in Poland – we want Chopin Airport to continue to perform this function. Therefore, we want to keep space in the existing terminal for traditional carriers so that they can develop their operations in an effective manner and in line with market needs,” he said in an interview.
What about the airports in Modlin and Radom?
When asked whether this did not contradict previous plans (“pushing” low-cost carriers to the ports in Modlin and Radom), he replied that the goal was to “create conditions for constructive cooperation with carriers so that they can make informed decisions about the selection of ports that best suit their needs.”
The portal market-lotniczy.pl also asked Anna Dermont, spokeswoman for PPL, about how the modernization plan will affect the future of smaller airports in Masovia. “Today it is too early to talk about the impact of investments in Warsaw on the future of Warsaw-Radom Airport or any other airport,” she said.
A detailed plan for the modernization of the capital port is to be announced at the turn of 2024 and 2025. What then about the plan to establish the CPK? We wrote more about it here.
