A real train from the 19th century. The Polish attraction costs pennies
Here, passengers will embark on a journey as if from the 19th century. Thanks to a group of enthusiasts, a real train is running on the tracks. Tickets cost the same as last year.
Retro train travel is experiencing a renaissance. While tickets for the PKP Intercity hit Nieśpieszny sell out in the blink of an eye, passengers can also travel on another historic train – with a steam locomotive. This railway goes even deeper into the past – its construction began at the end of the 19th century in the Prussian partition, and today it is one of the most interesting railway attractions in Greater Poland. Both steam locomotives still used today come from 1951 and 1955, and the oldest service wagon from 1929.
Średzka District Railway. Attraction for cheap
Średzka Kolej Powiatowa once connected Poznań with Środa Wielkopolska. To this day, a 14-kilometer section from Środa to Zaniemyśl has been preserved of the 63 km of the historical line. What matters here is not the destination, but the time spent on the journey. Most of the route runs through picturesque fields and villages in Greater Poland, making the courses a popular weekend and summer attraction. Trains stop at all stops along the route. Some of them (Annopole, Płaczki, Śnieciska, Polwica) are on-demand stops. The principle is “first come, first served”, except for groups of more than 20 people. It’s worth getting a good place early.
Ticket prices for the retro train
The attraction is inexpensive and ticket prices have not increased compared to last year. A regular ticket costs PLN 30, and a return ticket costs PLN 40. There are also discounts for children, school youth and pensioners. The timetable is designed to conveniently continue the journey with trains of Koleje Wielkopolskie, a partner of the historic railway, POLREGIO and PKP Intercity.
In the spring season of 2026, trains with a steam locomotive will run between Środa and Zaniemyśl on the May weekend and on Sundays (Departures from Środa at 10:30 and 14:30, from Zaniemyśl at 12:30 and 16:30). Detailed information about the summer timetable and locomotives running the trains is available on the website of Średzka Kolej Powiatowa.
