A Polish woman’s terrible accident at the Olympics. There is new news straight from the hospital!
Kamila Sellier unfortunately finished the 1500 meters short track race at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Konrad Niedźwiedzki, head of the Polish mission, spoke about her health.
Let us remind you that a very dangerous incident took place on Friday evening (i.e. February 20) during the competition on the short track route, over a distance of 1,500 meters. It was not a happy day for the three Polish women taking part.
Winter 2026: Kamila Sellier’s accident. We know what’s going on with the health of the Polish representative
Natalia Maliszewska was the first to start. The Pole, who specializes in shorter distances, finished third in her quarterfinal. However, the time achieved by Maliszewska did not allow her to advance to the semi-finals.
On this day, the greatest hopes could be placed on Gabriela Topolska. The youngest Polish representative is among the world’s best in the 1500 meters. Unfortunately, she had an unfortunate fall during her start at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Interestingly, it was similar in the case of the 1000 meters competition.
However, the worst scenario awaited Kamila Sellier. The Pole started very ambitiously in her quarterfinals, packed with the biggest short track stars. Unfortunately, Sellier fell on one of the turns after close contact with her opponent. What’s worse, while falling, the opponent from the USA unfortunately caught the Polish woman with the fin of her skate. Replays shown during the broadcast showed the horrific sight of Sellier’s face cut, unfortunately around the eye.
Even during the competition, further news related to the health of the athlete from Elbląg arrived. The first news indicated that it was a blessing in disguise, i.e. that everything was fine with the eye.
Konrad Niedźwiedzki, head of the Polish Olympic mission, spoke on Saturday morning (February 21) on Eurosport.
– Kamila underwent a procedure in which the damaged bone, as shown on the CT scan, was put back together. And everything was cleansed. Today she woke up, very swollen. She didn’t sleep much at night. Today, she faces tests. According to what the head of the medical mission told me yesterday, today there will be, among others: eyeball tests. But yesterday the eye passed such preliminary, positive tests and that was the most important thing for us – Niedźwiedzka described the situation.
2026 Games in Italy. Where and when to watch the Poles’ starts?
The Polish national team during the opening games consists of 60 athletes. In the 21st century, there has never been a time when a Polish woman or a Pole was not on the Olympic podium during the Winter Olympics. During the last winter games, Poland finished the competition with one medal. The bronze medal was won by ski jumper Dawid Kubacki in the normal hill competition.
Kubacki’s result was beaten at the Winter Winter Olympics 2026 by Kacper Tomasiak, a debutant among Olympians. The 19-year-old great talent won a silver medal in the normal hill competition and a bronze medal in the large hill competition in Predazzo. Additionally, the jumpers also placed second on the podium during the duo competition. Paweł Wąsek performed in the duet alongside Tomasiak.
Another Olympic vice-championship was also won by another Olympic Games debutant, Vladimir Semirunniy, in the 10 km speed skating race.
In the history of the Olympic Games, the Polish national team has won a total of 27 medals – seven gold, ten silver and ten bronze, respectively. Interestingly, the first bronze medal for Poland was won by Franciszek Gąsienica-Groń (Nordic combined) almost exactly 70 years ago, during the Olympic Games in… Cortina d’Ampezzo. This year, history has come full circle in a beautiful Italian-Polish Olympic circle.
Broadcasts from Winter Olympics 2026 in Poland are provided by Telewizja Polska (TVP) and the Discovery group (Eurosport). The event will last until Sunday, February 22.
