A nuclear power plant can be built here. Residents showed what they think about it

The inhabitants of Bełchatów and the surrounding area are unanimously in favor of nuclear energy.
The results of the latest PGE GIEK survey indicate that as much as 97.2 percent respondents support the construction of a nuclear power plant in place of the current coal complex.
Bełchatów ready for energy transformation
The research of social opinion carried out at the end of March 2025 shows that the inhabitants of Bełchatów and the Bełchatów poviat strongly support the plan to transform the local energy complex into a nuclear power plant. In the PGE Giek survey, conducted during the conference “From coal to atom. Bełchatów of the future”, as much as 97.2 percent. Participants expressed a positive position towards the investment.
Strong support for the local community
Out of 1173 examined people, 1048 declared full support for the construction of the nuclear power plant in Bełchatów. Another 92 people replied “rather yes”, which together gives over 97 percent. positive reviews. Only 22 people spoke against the investment, and 11 respondents had no opinion.
The respondents most often pointed to such benefits as creating new jobs (996 indications), an increase in energy security (954 answers), development of the region and infrastructure (921 votes), as well as a possible reduction in energy costs (615 people) and the development of modern technologies (606 answers). Over 500 respondents also see the chance to reduce CO2 emissions.
Atomic power plant as a chance for the future of the region
The planned nuclear power plant would be built in the current mining and energy complex, which from 1975 provided electricity for the whole country. This project is seen as a key element of a fair energy transformation, providing new opportunities for the inhabitants of the region.
The most numerous group of respondents were the inhabitants of Bełchatów himself (636 people) and the Bełchatów poviat (273 people). The age group of 41–65 dominated, which represented over 73 percent. all study participants.
