At the end of March, a new record was set for the deposit system. A customer of one of the stores in Opole returned over 1,000 packages. For this he received a kind of 500 plus.

A deposit system has been in place in Poland since October last year. Under this scheme, a deposit of PLN 50 is added for drinks in plastic bottles and metal cans. For drinks in reusable glass bottles, there is a deposit of PLN 1. After drinking the drink, we can collect the deposit by returning the bottle to the store (without a receipt and to any store).

500 plus for returning over 1,000 bottles

It turns out that the deposit system also attracts customers to small stores. According to the website dlahandlu.pl, a record 1,095 packages were returned in the Smakosz liquor store in Opole (Rabat Detal chain) on March 31. For returning such a large number of bottles, the customer received a kind of 500 plus or even more (PLN 547.50).

The store owner, Błażej Ziomek, emphasizes that packaging returns increase traffic. – We see high customer involvement in packaging returns, which translates into real traffic. I am glad that we are able to handle it efficiently and keep the store tidy even with a larger number of returns – says Ziomek.

The record was achieved using the TomraS1 recycler. – The deposit system really attracts customers to small stores. Although the average number of returned packages in one session is approximately 11, there are cases of even more than 1,000 bottles and cans in one session. This shows how dynamically the system is developing and how much potential local stores have in attracting customers. At the same time, it confirms how important it is to properly adjust the recycler to the return scale – says Agnieszka Pokładek, sales director at TOMRA Collection Polska, quoted by the portal, emphasizing that the appropriate capacity of the device minimizes the need to replace the bag and improves the daily work of staff.

The deposit system is also very popular in discount stores. According to Wirtualna Polska, a Lidl customer in Gdynia recently earned over PLN 460 for returning 920 packages. A customer of one of the Biedronkas in Wrocław, who returned 807 packages at one time, received slightly less.
