Scientists have discovered a new tick species in Istanbul. Haemaphysalis longicornis worried experts because it can carry up to 30 different diseases.

The discovery of Haemaphysalis Longicornis are researchers from the University of Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa. They described their arrangements in the “Experimental and Applied Acarology” magazine. They warned that we were dealing with an invasive species, able to transmit potentially dangerous diseases.

The co -author of the study Adem Keskin emphasized that for the first time the new species came across in 2023. A resident of Istanbul noticed a creature on his body and gave it to scientists for analysis. According to experts, Haemaphysalis Longicornis is an invasive species from China.

– We believe that this species of tick has already settled in Turkey – emphasized Keskin. His group began to monitor the presence of a tick in the country. They also observed the development of arachnid from larva to adult females. The species was to reproduce and spread locally.

In Daily Sabah, Adem Keskin warned against the potentially dangerous effects of the greater spread of the new tick. – It is known that Haemaphysalis longicornis has high potential and is associated with over 30 pathogenic factors – he said, meaning the potential to spread pathogens.

– It is common in China and Australia, and after 2017 he reached the United States, leading to serious problems with animal health. Now, for the first time, he has been documented in Turkey – informed Dr. Kandai Doi cooperating with Keskin.

Haemaphysalis longicornis is a long -term tick. He is a parasitic arachnid from East Asia, known for his rapid reproduction by virginity. It settles mainly on animals, but also threatens people, carrying, among others Lyme disease and spotted fever.
