A key investment in the railway has been confirmed. It is linked to CPK
The Central Communication Port (CPK) company announced a contract worth almost PLN 85 million to design the first stage of a railway junction that will connect Warsaw with Łódź. Design work includes the High Speed Rail (HSR) lines and accompanying infrastructure, which is of key importance for the future operation of the new CPK airport.
The contract worth PLN 84.8 million net was signed with the consortium of Elkol and Mosty Katowice. The investment also includes the design of a freight station that will improve transport on the newly constructed route. The designers will base their work on a feasibility study prepared in 2021-2023 and an environmental decision obtained in July 2023. The basic scope of the contract is to be completed within a year and a half, and the entire contract, including optional tasks, should be completed within four years. The contract includes optional tasks such as preparation of tender materials, author supervision and the design of an intermodal terminal.
Railway infrastructure is key for CPK
Under the contract, the Elkol and Mosty Katowice consortium is responsible for designing elements of railway infrastructure in various sectors, including track and telecommunications. An important element of the design work will be coordination of activities with other projects implemented as part of CPK, which is to ensure effective integration of the railway system with the new airport.
Maciej Lasek, the government’s representative for CPK, emphasized that an effective connection of the airport with the rail network is crucial for the success of the entire project. CPK is a strategic investment for Poland, which involves the construction of a new, central airport and the expansion of rail infrastructure. The new airport, located between Warsaw and Łódź, is to initially serve 34 million passengers per year, with the possibility of further expansion. The estimated cost of the investment by 2032 is PLN 131.7 billion.
The Warsaw–Łódź section is scheduled to be ready in 2032. The travel time between these cities, according to the plan, will take 40 minutes. In turn, the Łódź–Wrocław and Sieradz–Poznań sections should be completed in 2035.
